6 LPA In-Hand Salary: Why You Get ₹42,598, Not ₹50,000
A ₹6 LPA CTC gives about ₹42,598 a month in hand, not ₹50,000. See where PF, gratuity and professional tax go, and what to check in your offer.
Why does a ₹6 lakh offer not put ₹50,000 in your bank account every month? Because CTC (cost to company) is what your employer spends on you, not what you receive. In our worked example (₹6 lakh CTC, basic pay at 50% of CTC, new tax regime, no variable pay), the monthly in-hand salary is about ₹42,598. The gap of ₹7,402 is mostly your own money set aside for later (PF and gratuity), plus ₹200 a month of professional tax. Income tax is ₹0.
What CTC includes, and what it does not pay you
CTC is the total yearly cost of employing you. It includes the salary that reaches your bank account. It also includes amounts the company pays or sets aside on your behalf: its own share of provident fund (PF) and a yearly provision for gratuity. Neither arrives as cash in your monthly salary. So ₹6,00,000 divided by 12 gives the company's monthly cost, not your monthly credit. Two more items come out of the salary itself: your own share of PF and professional tax.
The worked example
Assumptions: ₹6,00,000 CTC; basic pay at 50% of CTC (₹3,00,000 a year, or ₹25,000 a month); PF at 12% of basic on both sides; gratuity at 4.81% of basic; professional tax at Karnataka's ₹200 a month; new tax regime; no variable pay. The figures are Kyun's own calculation, and a published 6 LPA breakdown arrives at the same in-hand amount.
| Step | Per year | Per month |
|---|---|---|
| CTC | ₹6,00,000 | ₹50,000 |
| Less: your PF (12% of basic) | ₹36,000 | ₹3,000 |
| Less: company's PF (12% of basic) | ₹36,000 | ₹3,000 |
| Less: gratuity provision (4.81% of basic) | ₹14,430 | about ₹1,202 |
| Less: professional tax | ₹2,400 | ₹200 |
| Less: income tax | ₹0 | ₹0 |
| In-hand salary | ₹5,11,170 | about ₹42,598 |
Another way to read it: CTC minus the company's PF and the gratuity provision leaves a gross salary of ₹5,49,570. Your own PF (₹36,000) and professional tax (₹2,400) come out of that, which leaves ₹5,11,170.
Provident fund
PF is 12% of basic pay from you and 12% from the company. On a basic of ₹25,000, that is ₹3,000 each, ₹6,000 a month and ₹72,000 a year. Your ₹3,000 is deducted from your salary. The company's ₹3,000 is already inside your CTC, so it never reaches you as salary. Both are for your retirement, so this is your money, just not spendable now. One detail: the company's 12% is split. As per EPFO, 8.33% of wages goes to the pension fund (EPS) and the rest to the EPF account, so not all of the company's share sits as a balance in your PF account. If the pension share is worked out on the full ₹25,000, 8.33% is about ₹2,083 a month. Confirm the exact split with your payroll team.
Gratuity
Gratuity is a lump sum the employer pays for long service. Under the Payment of Gratuity Act, 1972, it is 15 days of wages for each year of service, calculated as monthly wages × 15/26 × years of service. CTC breakdowns usually show it as about 4.81% of basic (15/26 divided by 12). On ₹3,00,000 of basic, that is ₹14,430. Using the exact fraction gives ₹14,423, so the small difference is rounding. You become eligible after five years of continuous service; this condition is waived on death or disablement. As an illustration, if your basic is ₹25,000 when you leave after five years, the formula gives 25,000 × 15/26 × 5, about ₹72,115. Your actual amount depends on your wages at exit.
Professional tax
Professional tax is charged by states, and the Constitution caps it at ₹2,500 per person per year. Karnataka charges ₹200 a month for salaries of ₹25,000 and above, which makes ₹2,400 a year. Rates differ by state, so check yours. This is the only part of the ₹7,402 that is truly gone.
Income tax
Under the new regime, salaried people get a ₹75,000 standard deduction, and a rebate of ₹60,000 applies up to ₹12 lakh of taxable income. One guide puts zero tax at salaries up to ₹12.75 lakh for FY 2026-27. A ₹6 lakh CTC is far below that, so income tax is ₹0. We have not worked out the old regime here.
Where the ₹7,402 goes
| Item | Per month | Whose money | When you see it |
|---|---|---|---|
| PF, both sides | ₹6,000 | Yours, for retirement (part of the company's share goes to the pension fund) | Builds up over your career |
| Gratuity | about ₹1,202 | Yours, if you meet the service condition | After five years of continuous service (earlier on death or disablement) |
| Professional tax | ₹200 | State government | Gone |
| Income tax | ₹0 | Nothing due in this case | Not applicable |
Amounts are rounded to the nearest rupee. Of the ₹7,402 gap, about ₹7,200 is set aside for you and ₹200 is paid out as tax.
What changed on 17 September 2026
PF used to be calculated on a maximum wage of ₹15,000 a month, so the highest PF on each side was ₹1,800. Notification S.O. 5109(E) raised the wage ceiling to ₹25,000 from 17 September 2026, after a Cabinet announcement on 16 September. The highest PF on each side is now ₹3,000. Many online calculators still assume ₹1,800, and for this example they show ₹44,998 a month.
| PF wage ceiling | Highest PF per side, per month | PF per side, per year (this example) | In-hand per year | In-hand per month |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| ₹15,000 (older) | ₹1,800 | ₹21,600 | ₹5,39,970 | ₹44,998 |
| ₹25,000 (since 17 Sep 2026) | ₹3,000 | ₹36,000 | ₹5,11,170 | ₹42,598 |
The ₹2,400 monthly difference has two halves. With the lower cap, your PF deduction is ₹1,200 a month smaller, and the company's PF cost is also ₹1,200 smaller. In a fixed-CTC structure, that second ₹1,200 would be paid to you as other salary. That is our reading of the arithmetic. The higher ceiling does not make your CTC smaller; it moves more of the same CTC into your PF.
Our example has a basic of exactly ₹25,000, so PF on full basic equals PF at the ceiling. If your basic is higher, ask how your employer calculates PF. The BDO alert notes that employers already contributing on salaries above ₹25,000 may see no change. It also says employees with wages between ₹15,000 and ₹25,000 may newly come under mandatory PF and pension coverage.
Why basic pay matters
The Labour Codes, in force since 21 November 2025, count basic pay, dearness allowance and retaining allowance as wages, and require wages to be at least 50% of total remuneration. PF and gratuity are worked out on wages, so a bigger basic raises both and can lower your monthly in-hand without changing CTC. That is why our example sets basic at 50% of CTC. A news report from November 2025 said detailed rules were still pending, so check how your employer applies the rule today.
Who this affects
- Anyone with a new offer, especially freshers comparing two or three offers.
- People with variable pay. It sits inside CTC but does not arrive every month. Our example assumes none, so your real monthly figure may be lower.
- People who may leave within five years, because gratuity is tied to continuous service.
- People outside Karnataka, because professional tax differs by state.
Common mistakes
- Dividing CTC by 12 and treating the result as salary.
- Calling PF and gratuity lost money. PF goes to your retirement account, and gratuity is payable if you meet the service condition.
- Counting variable pay as monthly income.
- Trusting an old calculator that still uses the ₹1,800 PF cap.
- Assuming gratuity is guaranteed. Leave before five years of continuous service and it is generally not payable, except on death or disablement.
- Comparing offers on CTC alone.
What you can do
- Ask for three things in writing: how much is basic, how much is variable, and the monthly in-hand figure.
- Ask which tax regime and which state's professional tax the in-hand figure assumes.
- Ask whether PF is calculated on ₹25,000 or on your full basic.
- Keep variable pay out of your monthly budget until you see how it is actually paid.
- When comparing offers, compare in-hand salary, PF and the five-year gratuity mark, not CTC alone.
Key takeaways
- CTC is the company's cost, not your monthly credit.
- On ₹6 LPA (basic 50%, new regime, no variable pay), in-hand is about ₹42,598, not ₹50,000.
- Of the ₹7,402 gap, ₹6,000 is PF, about ₹1,202 is gratuity provision, and only ₹200 of professional tax is truly gone.
- The PF wage ceiling has been ₹25,000 since 17 September 2026. Calculators using ₹1,800 overstate in-hand (₹44,998 here).
- Gratuity is payable after five years of continuous service.
- Before you accept, get basic, variable and monthly in-hand in writing.
FAQ
What is the in-hand salary for a 6 LPA CTC?
About ₹42,598 a month, or ₹5,11,170 a year. This assumes basic pay of 50% of CTC, PF at 12% on both sides, gratuity at 4.81% of basic, professional tax of ₹200 a month, the new tax regime and no variable pay.
Is the PF deducted from my salary lost money?
No. Your PF share and the company's PF share are for your retirement. Part of the company's share goes to the pension fund (EPS) instead of your PF balance.
When do I get gratuity?
Gratuity is payable after five years of continuous service. The five-year condition is waived on death or disablement. The amount is calculated as monthly wages × 15/26 × years of service.
Why do some calculators show ₹44,998 instead of ₹42,598?
They use the older PF wage cap of ₹15,000, which limits PF to ₹1,800 a side. The ceiling has been ₹25,000 since 17 September 2026, so PF can now reach ₹3,000 a side.
