Common questions

Is a salary of ₹12.75 lakh tax-free?

Yes, under the new regime. The ₹75,000 standard deduction brings taxable income down to ₹12 lakh, and the rebate cancels all tax up to that level.

Did Budget 2026 change the tax slabs?

No. The slabs, the ₹75,000 standard deduction and the ₹60,000 rebate stay the same for FY 2026-27 as in FY 2025-26.

What is marginal relief?

If your taxable income is just over ₹12 lakh, your tax can’t be more than the amount by which you cross ₹12 lakh. At ₹12.1 lakh taxable, you pay ₹10,000 plus cess, not ₹61,500.

Which regime applies if I don’t choose?

The new regime is the default. Salaried people can pick the old regime each year when they file their return.

Who should pick the old regime?

Mostly people with large deductions, such as full 80C, HRA in a big city and home loan interest. Enter yours above and the calculator tells you which regime costs less.
